Hurricane Rita – Evacuation Traffic speeds on I-45 North in north Houston

As of September 22, 9:30 pm in Houston, Texas - on one of the Hurricane Rita evacuation route:

I-45 northbound at 1960 and Louetta is still traveling at 2 to 3 mph - very, very slow. It will take you almost two hours to travel on Interstate 45 north-bound from 1960 to reach the point where the Hardy Toll Road meets Interstate 45.

Once you are north of Conroe and going up to Buffalo, Texas, traffic speeds up and then increases again at the contra-flow lanes on I-45.

Speeds on Highway 59 Eastex up to Townsen Blvd. in Humble are up to 65 mph - a normal daily speed - great improvement from yesterday. The Hwy 59 Eastex is not an official evacuation route.

Traffic on the I-45 Gulf Freeway traveling north at normal daily speeds of 50 to 60 mph - wow, amazing improvement after the bumper-to-bumper traffic earlier this week during the Galveston evacuation.

Red Cross has lined up several shelters along the Hurricane Rita evacuation routes that will open shortly to assist people along the routes.

Houston Metro buses will carry volunteers to provide food and water to evacuees stranded along the evacuation roads.
